- If Stephen Jones was born in April of 1820, and if this census was conducted in August of 1820, I would have expected to find Stephen listed as a male child.
However, the actual collection of the census could have take place well before it was "certified" as the enumeration date in August. Therefore, before the birth of Stephen.

- If indeed this is my John Jones, there is a Lewis Jones living next door to him, and it appears that they are about the same age, indicating that they might be brothers.

1820 Census for John Jones in Duplin Co. NC
|
Census |
1830 |
Duplin County, North Carolina [6] |
Residence for 1830 Census |
- There were four "John Jones" families listed in the 1830 Duplin Co. NC census. I strongly believe that this is the correct one for my family. The wife of John is still not listed, so she must have died earlier. Stephen would be the 9-year-old boy, with one other boy (age 15-19) possibly Francis B., although I can find no evidence of Francis in the 1820 census. In addition, there are two teenage daughters. Mary is probably one, and the other may be Katherine (age 12), who marries John Hall.
Furthermore, next to this John Jones is James Grimes. I believe this to be the father of Charity Grimes, who marries John in 1830.

- The above note acknowledges that it appears that John Jones' wife is not listed in the 1830 census. However, on both sides of John Jones, in this 1830 census, are families named "Grimes".
This provides additional indications that the 1830 marriage of John Jones to Charity Grimes has come about him not being married in early 1830, and then he either marries a daughter of one of the Grimes, or Charity is a widow of one of the Grimes families.

- I cannot be 100% sure that Ally Dale is the correct wife for John Jones, but in the 1820 census, other Dale family members are living relatively close to the John Jones family, as well as the other family lines I'm working on, including O'Daniel, Mathews, Grady, etc.

Notes |
- I'm having difficulty finding John Jones prior to 1820. In the 1810 Census, there's not a good match, yet. I might consider the John Jones in Wayne County. I suspect, however, that he is unmarried and living with his parents, even though he may be 30 years old.
- I'll keep these notes for marriage, but right now, since Rowan County is quite far from Duplin, I'm ruling it out. It does match his birth year.

- I used to believe that Francis Benton Jones was the son of John A. Jones and a brother to Elijah Jones.
Because this Francis B Jones was living next to Elijah Jones in the 1860 census, I had assumed that they were brothers. I no longer think that they are brothers.
I suspect that they are related. It looks like there were quite a few Jones families who came from the Duplin County, NC area, but other supporting documentation does not support them being brothers.
It really appears that Francis B Jones was born in 1809. The father of Elijah, John Jones, does not marry Ally Daile until 19 Aug 1816.
Furthermore, in the 1820 census, the one that I believe is accurate for John Jones (the father), they only have one child listed. That is a daughter, under 10, who I believe is Mary.
